One of the biggest questions going into the week 9 bye was whether [HB] David Wilson (neck) would be returning to the lineup or landing on IR. The verdict, at this point, is neither. Wilson was in California today for a check-up MRI and although there was “significant improvement” in his herniated disc, he hasn’t been medically cleared and will have to wait several weeks before his next MRI. It seems like the hesitation to place Wilson on IR is due to lingering playoff hopes, which took a big blow during the bye week with the rest of the division winning. If the Giants lose a game or two over the next month, don’t be surprised if we shut #22 down.
Meanwhile, joining the team in practice today was [HB] Andre Brown, who has been on short term IR (designated to return). He says he’s ready to play, and will probably have a limited role against Oakland on Sunday. That means he needs to be moved onto the active roster and someone else will be bumped. Usually the Giants will find someone to place on IR in this situation, and candidates (other than David Wilson) include [DT] Shaun Rogers (knee), [CB] Jayron Hosley (hamstring), and [CB] Corey Webster (groin). Webster did not practice today, which is alarming considering the week off. With both Terrell Thomas and Trumaine McBride playing well, I wouldn’t be surprised if another defensive back was placed on IR.
Another player who was practicing today and could return to the lineup is [DT] Markus Kuhn (knee, currently on the PUP list). With the aging Shaun Rogers dealing with his own knee injury, I think it’s likely that Kuhn comes back and Rogers lands on IR. That move would have to happen by Thursday. Unlike Brown, Kuhn won’t be needed to come in and produce immediately, considering there will still be 4 players rotating ahead of him in Joseph, Jenkins, Patterson, and Hankins. Of course, it’s certainly possible that the Giants just stick with the group they have and elect not to activate Kuhn, meaning he himself would be placed on IR.
- [HB] Jeremy Wright was released from the practice squad and [CB] Brandon Jones was added. Jones is a Rutgers product that was in camp with the Patriots this season.
- The Giants week 11 game against the Packers has been flexed out of the 8:30 night time slot and into an afternoon 4:25 one. Obviously the Broncos/Chiefs game has a lot more national appeal at this point in the season, and after the pathetic showing the Giants and Vikings put out on week 7’s Monday night, I’m not surprised we were booted from prime time.
